Lectures
Informal and entertaining lectures on a variety of subjects can be tailored to your group, include slide show, along with show and tell samples. Approximately 50 minutes, with open-ended Q&A. $250 speaking fee.
Available Lecture Topics:

I love to add embellishments to my quilts. This lecture includes a slide show of the ways I’ve used beads, as well as some rather unusual items, in my finished quilts. In a recent Quilting Arts Magazine article, I described using beetle carcasses to adorn my quilts. So when I say anything, and everything, I’m not joking! Includes information about the tips and tricks I’ve learned to add embellishments, as well as a show and tell of some of my favorite pieces.

I developed this technique as a way to create a pen and ink-style sketch using thread. I’ve written about threadsketching for Quilting Arts Magazine, and also demonstrated the technique on an episode of Quilting Arts TV. It’s way easier than it looks! The lecture includes a slide show of step-by-step instructions for the technique, as well as trunk show samples of how I’ve incorporated it into my quilts.
Workshops
Hands-on workshops based on lecture topics can be scheduled in conjunction with the lecture as a half-day event, or scheduled separately as a half or whole day workshop. Workshops have a maximum of 15 participants and include materials for an additional fee. $350 for a 3-hour workshop. $575 for a 5-hour workshop.
Available Workshop Topics:
Wise Woman Pin

Create a whimsical fiber art brooch, learning hand beading skills in the process. $15 materials fee per participant includes beads, beading thread, beading needles, fiber for hair, charm, and brooch clasp. Supply list. 3 hour.
Beaded Embellishment Sampler

Add interest and excitement to your quilts. Students prepare a 9-patch block in advance, then we fill each piece with a different beading technique as we learn them. The sampler includes printed directions for re-creating each stitch, collated into booklet form with your beaded block as the cover. $15 materials fee per participant includes beads, beading thread, beading needles, instruction pages for booklet, and metal ring to bind booklet. The instructor has a limited number of prepared 9-patch blocks for purchase at $15 each. Supply list. 5 hour.
Color Block Fiber Art Portrait

Using a black and white portrait-style photograph and solid colored fabrics, create a fiber art portrait focusing on the saturated hues rather than values. The workshop includes an introduction to color theory. Supply list. 5 hour.
Threadsketching on a Photograph: Sewing Notions Bag

Learn an innovative technique to turn a black and white photograph into a thread-sketched image that resembles a pen and ink drawing—only with thread! We’ll free-motion embroider onto a photograph of assorted sewing notions, then incorporate that into a great bag, perfect for toting supplies to workshops and class. Finished bag is approximately 9” x 5” x 2.” Supply list. 3 hour.
Novelty Print Quilt

Think novelty prints are just for baby quilts? Think again! This workshop uses assorted novelty prints and fusible web appliqué techniques to create a unique and meaningful art quilt. Supply list. 3 or 5 hour, depending on quilt size.
Travel Expenses and Venue Requirements
I require a minimum agreement of one lecture and one workshop to teach guilds or groups for which I must travel more than one hour. Travel, lodging, and meals or meal expenses will be paid by the guild or group outside the DC-Maryland-Virginia area. For venues that are one to four hours driving distance from Rockville, MD, standard IRS mileage rates, plus tolls and parking will be charged to the guild or group. There will be no travel charges for venues under one hour driving distance.
I have easy access to Baltimore-Washington (BWI), Dulles (IAD), or Washington National (DCA) Airports, and am happy to coordinate economical flight plans with the program organizer. The guild or group is responsible for any fees if the group needs to cancel or change the program date after the flights have been booked.
For overnight lodging, I request a single room with a private bathroom and internet/wifi access. Whether in a hotel or guild member’s home, I ask that the lodging be smoke- and pet-free.
Lecture requirements include a microphone, projections screen (I will provide laptop, connection cords, and projector), two quilt racks, two tables to display quilts, and a table with power cord for the projector.
Workshop requirements are dependent upon which workshop you request. For all workshops, please make sure the venue is well lit, with ample space, and sufficient electrical outlets. Please check my Teaching Agreement for specific details.
